Return to Play Protocols

As members of the board of directors of the Weyburn Curling Club, we are forced to make decisions prior to this curling season which are again unusual and out of our comfort zone.  Other recreation facilities around us are also deciding on procedures and guidelines following the recent health orders by the Provincial government.  Recently the City of Weyburn provided guidelines for the use of its recreation facilities as follows:

The City of Weyburn has clarified what the situation currently is for proof of vaccination or negative COVID-19 tests in order to access leisure facilities. Based on the information provided by the provincial government, those will not be required at this time.

“Right now, the way that they have stated for those, is that it isn’t mandatory unless it is a ticketed event,” explained Mathew Warren, City Manager. “Also, there are some procedures around adult activities – anyone over the age of 18.”

Those procedures for adult activities refer to the masking rules laid out by the provincial government. Currently, those who are under the age of 18 are not required to wear a mask while participating in a sport, for the duration of the sport only. Those who are 18 and older, including athletes and officials, do not have to wear a mask for the duration of the sport or activity when they are subject to proof of vaccination policies.

The Weyburn Curling Club will be following similar policies as those above (as at Oct 8,2021).  We are excited to bring back access to the pebbled ice for everyone.  As with prior year’s enhanced protocols around health and safety, we will be asking you to restrict yourselves from the Curling Rink when you are experiencing any of the well-known, often published, flu-like symptoms.  Stay home if you are sick.  We will post other helpful guidelines prior to the season opening.  We are reviewing policies related to access to our lounge area.  In past decades, this area was only accessible to members, and we are considering bringing this policy back to accommodate teams meeting after scheduled league curling draws.

Exceptions to the above policies will occur when our facility is hosting CURLSASK Sanctioned events. For these events, their policies will be outlined in detail well in advance of the event with the most recent updates listed on their website at curlsask.ca.

We have many exciting things to show case at the Weyburn Curling Club this season, stay tuned!  We are incredibly fortunate to have Jim Nikolejsin on as our new club manager.  We are also thankful for our returning lounge and ice making staff, and volunteers.  We are also very thankful for the Weyburn Ag Society Board and volunteers for pulling together and raising funds to maintain the exterior structure of the building that we curl in. Thank you to those who donated to their recent roof fundraising campaign.

For those of us fortunate to call the Weyburn and surrounding area our home we have much to be thankful for, as this is such a great community to live in.  We invite you to curl and join in the fun with us!  We are committed to providing enjoyment and affordable curling for all ages, working to develop skills, building self-esteem, promoting sportsmanship, fostering teamwork, connecting families, providing opportunity for competition, and establishing life-long friendships.  It’s an opportunity not to be taken for granted!  I’ve been enjoying winters at the Curling Club since 1994 and look forward to many more, and as always welcome to our house!

On behalf of the Board,

Clare Johnson President, Weyburn Curling Club
